Kail Gerrad

Captain of the Ashen Rook.

Kail's History

Tales of daring do and hijinx on the high seas. Where we've come from, where we're going, where the sails take us when urged on by the winds of fortune. Hang on scallywag, there's going to be some chop.

The Ashen Rook

A finer bird of ash and darksteel there has never been. Home and haven to those that love her, doom and destruction to those that would use her. Blink and she'll fool ya, listen and she'll tell ye stories of a bygone era.

The Rejects

The Crew. The Boys. The Girls. The ones you didn't want, the ones that didn't want you. We know our make and measure, can you say the same?

Kail Gerrad
"The Sea Dog"

Loath as he is to admit it, Kail's story didn't start in Limsa Lominsa. Rather he began life on the streets of the one city he hates above all others, Ul'dah. With no family to speak of, he was one of the many urchins that had slipped through the cracks, and burrowed into the underside of the desert metropolis. His daily life consisted of stealing to live, dodging the local gangs, and keeping a step ahead of the Brass Blades. At a young age Kail learned that survival is a trick best learned quick, or not at all.

It was in the rush of refugees from Ala Mhigo that Kail's life saw a turn for the worst. In the city's confusion, slavers decided to capitalize upon the booming population and (with some of the Syndicate's blessing) began rounding up Ul'dah's destitute to take to market. With no backing from a gang and no family to pay bribes to the slavers guild, Kail was among the first batch of slaves to enrich the pockets of the city, and take pressure off it's growing population.

Kail was sold to the crew of a Highlander pirate known as Argus, to work off his lifedebt aboard the deck of the "Howling Sin". Under the brutal tutelage of Argus and his mysterious Doman benefactor Tseng, Kail learned what it meant to sail the salt waves, and to take lives. Among the other slaves aboard the cursed ship, he learned what it was to have family. With it's slave crew the Howling Sin enjoyed a period of success as a privateer and smuggling vessel in Doman waters.

That all changed when Kail and the other slaves rebelled against their masters. Led by a mysterious figure known only as Songbird, they slew the original crew of the Howling Sin, before sailing the ship to Limsa Lominsa and burning her just outside the bay of the pirate city. Her task apparently finished Songbird vanished without a trace, and in their confusion, the crew turned to Kail for leadership.

Grudgingly Kail organized the lot of them into a mercenary company that worked out of the city of Limsa. Hiring out their services both overt and covert, the old crew of the Sin managed to pool together the funds to construct a beauty of a ship, the Ashen Rook. Now sailing as corsair under the flag of Limsa Lominsa, Kail Gerrad watches over his ship and his crew....wondering if Songbird shall ever return.

The Ashen Rook

Constructed as a private venture by the ship's crew, the Ashen Rook is a marvelous marriage of Limsan craftsmanship, and Goblin steamwerks. A three masted sloop built of ash and armored in darksteel, she is among the lightest and thus the fastest ships that sail the seas between Limsa and Doma. Lightly armed for a ship created during a time of war, the Rook never the less possesses a wealth of tricks and secrets that she can bring to bear upon the bolder of the sea's predators. Attempt to make her a prize at your own peril.

Meet the Crew

A captain ent nothin without his crew, an I've been cursed with the worst oh the lot. Misfits, fools, and killers all...and I wouldn't trade a single one oh them fer all the jewels in Ul- feckin- dah. So here they are, the ones I lean on when all else goes t'shite.

Noyra - The gentle Sea Wolf giant with an artist’s soul, she seems the type that would be more at home blowing glass baubles on a quiet secluded beach. Circumstances however have dictated a different sort of life for her, one where she is constantly at the vortex of chaos and violence. All the love she would have given to her chosen craft instead goes towards the Ashen Rook and it’s crew, the gods help any that would do harm to either.

Ser Laloquer Rosen - Intelligent, cunning, and very much aware of it, this lalafell scion of Ul’dah dreams of the days when his services were still in much demand. Once of the premiere surgeons and alchemists of the desert city, he found himself outcast when his work ran afoul of the machinations of the Syndicate. Now he makes his way and living as the Ashen Rooks medico, albeit with no small amount of fuss. He prizes intelligence, and despises those who would prefer ignorance, so much so that he devotes his spare time aboard the Rook to helping it’s crew learn to read and write.

Syf Askerfelt - Violence incarnate, this blind highlander spearmaster never met a problem she couldn’t solve by making it soil itself. Descended from the now defunct tribes of fishermen hyur that dotted the islands of the Rothlyt Sound, Syf is the last echo of a people about to fade from existence. If she has any say in the matter they will not go quietly into the night. She occupies a paradoxical place in the Rook’s crew, who are primarily concerned with saving their ship…while she considers herself a ship killer.

Isral Qol’quit - flamboyant, charming, and quick with a smile, this Miqo’te serves as the first mate and quartermaster aboard the Ashen Rook A virtual repository of songs, stories, and poetry, Isral uses all of these to dispel feelings of boredom or malaise among the crew. There is however one tale he refuses to tell, and that is how he was expelled from his tribe.

Mazie Tarfoot - The youngest and least experienced of the Ashen Rook’s crew, this Midlander daughter of Limsa attempts to make a name for herself on the open seas. Hardened by a life as the eldest child of a broken family in a city of pirates, Mazie still finds herself being surprised by the wonders that the Rook encounters on her journeys. She’s determined to show the others she has what it takes to be a sailor of the salt waves…she just hopes there’s something left of herself after the fact.
